Outcome
The Department of Defence undertook an infrastructure upgrade project to accommodate new aircraft, which required major earthworks in an area known to contain PFAS-impacted soils. We were engaged to complete an initial water treatment feasibility study comprising laboratory and pilot scale trials to inform the design of primary and secondary water treatment units. We then designed, procured, commissioned, and operated a 2 litre-per-second water treatment plant that reduced PFAS concentrations to below laboratory detection limits. The plant was operated, as required, in response to rainfall events throughout 2018 and 2019, facilitating the discharge of treated water to the environment via the main surface-water drain at the site, in accordance with Defence and Environment Protection Authority (EPA) approval requirements.
